Based in 1949 Los Angeles, 'Gangster Squad' tells the story of a troupe of cops brought together to derail the stronghold of infamous mob king Mickey Cohen who dictates the law in the west.
Sergeant John O'Mara (Josh Brolin), with the help of his pregnant wife Connie, handpicks the ramshackle squad of six, each of whom are selected for their unique set of skills and add their own comedic touch as the tale, which is based on true events, unfolds.
For obvious reasons, Ryan Gosling is memorable in his role as suave cop Jerry, who decides he wants in on the operation after his young street vendor buddy is brutally shot by one of Cohen’s henchmen in a random machine-gun firing spree.
His forbidden romance with Cohen’s girl, wannabe starlet Grace, (played by Emma Stone – yes, the sizzling 'Crazy Stupid Love' chemistry is back) is a welcome distraction from the relentless violence and at times gruesome scenes inflicted by boxer-turned-kingpin Cohen, (Sean Penn) whose slightly distorted face, evil eyes and scathing one-liners are quite frankly, scary.
Despite its cheesy moments and gags typical of the American gangster genre, and what it lacks in originality and depth, 'Gangster Squad' predominantly makes up for in its engaging cast members, overall stylish, authentic feel, and ability to maintain suspense and entertain throughout the full two hours.
