Forever Enthralled (2009)

A biographical account of Mei Lanfang, China's greatest opera star. In Imperial China, an actors' social status was no higher than that of the prostitutes. Thirteen-year-old Mei Lanfang followed in his grandfather's footsteps to become a male Peking opera performer who specialised in playing female roles. His uncle opposed his choice and urged him to quit the profession. He could foresee the trouble lying ahead for a man who acted as a woman on the stage.
